The Human Touch

In today's world of business, minimal staff is a big cog in the profitability mechanism. While reaching a level of cost effectiveness, certain aspects of customer service, evaluation of production and investor interaction cannot be automated.

My children once asked me if I would prefer a jar 100% full of roaches or one 50% full of butterflies. Real world response would dictate the jar be full butterflies. Realistically, the correct answer is 50% full.

Corporations are plagued with this conundrum, and those that choose "100% full" reach bankruptcy at a sprinter's pace. In the race to fill their coffers, sacrificing the human quality is much more costly than the payroll which it saved.

Take an example of a warehouse type discount store. Floor to 20 foot ceiling is filled with merchandise available to chosen portions of the public at what appears to be premium prices. The only employees are the manager of the floor and the cashiers.

The consumer must do his homework before shopping or risk purchasing a cheap widget that will not solve his dilemma. In short, there is no one to answer his questions while he shops.

Once Joe Shopper gets home and finds that his bargain widget does not fit, he has choices.

  • Bring the widget back and handle the frustration of the return policy.
  • Keep the worthless widget and spend more money to buy a new widget.
Both experiences are not favorable for Joe or the company. Joe will not share the good experience of the premium price with his friends and blog readers, but instead will share his frustration. There is such a thing as bad ink.

The company is out even more than Joe.

  • Loss of the original sale.
  • Added payroll of the return and the processing of the returned item.
So if the loss can be stemmed by spending the money to provide another job to the home community, why do companies consider cutting payroll as a viable solution?

Breastfeeding & prescription drugs

You followed your prenatal plan to the letter. Baby came amidst joy and celebration.

Now you are home and breastfeeding. Should you be taking prescription medication? Just the facts: Here's what you need to know.

Prescription drugs enter mother's bloodstream and become part of breast milk. During breastfeeding, prescription drugs should be avoided except where medically necessary. In those instances, consulting the prescribing obstetrician and the pharmacist is mandatory. Herbal supplements and over-the-counter medicines can have the same detrimental effects as prescription medicines.

More than forty percent of women in the United States of childbearing age (18-44) take at least one prescription per day. Even though prescription drugs help mothers lead healthier lives, they are detrimental to babies who do not share mother's illnesses.

Recycling: Guerrilla warfare tactic on gas prices

Tired of high gas prices? Take on Big Oil with your garbage.

The production of recyclable materials consumes more fossil fuel than all of the cars in the United Sates. By reducing the amount of virgin polythene for plastic containers, glass from sand & feldspar, fresh paper from trees, and aluminum, tin and steel cans from ore, everyone can control fuel consumption by recycling. By exercising the law of supply and demand, they have direct control over the cost of their own energy consumption, both electric and gasoline.

Prescription prices

Getting tired of being mugged in the pharmacy line? Brazil is. They want the price Thailand pays, not the American price or the middle of the road price Merck offered them on the AIDS medication Efavirenz.

Over patented AIDS drugs, Merck is seeking to have Brazil listed on the US copyright violators list. The New Jersey-based pharmaceutical giant, Merck holds the patents on AIDS drugs that Brazil provides free to its population in need.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced that Brazil will issue a "compulsory license" to bypass Merck's intellectual property patent for the drug Efavirenz. The compulsory license allows for the manufacture or purchase of generic versions of drugs, with minute royalties to the patent holder.

The recycled toothbrush

Recycling is one of the staples of environmental awareness. But recycled toothbrushes?

A recycled toothbrush sounds disgusting until you look a little closer; and it is delivered; and you never have to remember replacing it; and it helps the environment. Let's look into one of the most innovative plans on the market.

Since the production of plastic consumes more oil than any other industry (yes, more than cars), recycling plastic is key to preserving our fragile environment and oil reserves. You ask, "But in my toothbrush?" Sure. Here's how:
